My sister, bless her, was the first person to entrust me with a project. Her request was relatively simple: two 18KT yellow gold bands, with shared prongs, small diamonds and a dainty profile. This is a request that is particularly trendy at the moment – gone are the days of visible metal and significant settings. People are requesting tiny diamonds with barely visible bands – elegant and sparkly. Gorgeous!

…and occasionally problematic. The tinier the diamond, the daintier the metal, the more committed you are to having to replace stones over the course of your ring’s life. The stones pictured in the rings above are .02ct each, or, about 1.7mm across. Anything smaller than this and the metal will be too flimsy to hold the stones, ESPECIALLY if you are working with 18KT gold, as the alloy is slightly softer than the 14KT counterparts.

So, dainty ladies – proceed with caution. My sister’s rings have lost two stones in the last 1.5 years. But damn, they do look good!
