Sunday Spotlight: Plevé

I will declare my bias early: this is the line I used to work on at my old company. That does not change the fact that it is one of the most beautiful and innovative jewelry techniques in existence today! The very talented designer, Ron Rizzo, conceived of the idea while staring at a pile of loose, scattered diamonds on his bench. He got to work immediately on developing a process that would allow him to essentially freeze the stones in their organic arrangement. Many many months/years of hard work later, Plevé came into its own.

The process is indeed fascinating. The talented artisans responsible for the arrangement of the mosaics are former art school graduates, with backgrounds in everything from sculpture to illustration. The training process is intense and takes anywhere from six months to a year to really get going.

Once painstakingly arranged girdle to girdle, the diamonds are then ‘frozen’ in a high-tech light-cured ceramic process, not entirely unlike what dentists use. After a final buff and polish, they are ready to dazzle.

I think it’s amazing that no two pieces are exactly alike – which is a wonderful thought especially when dropping a lot of $$ on some luxury jewelry. I have also heard them referred to as “paintings in diamonds” which I think is a very appropriate way to describe their artistry. This line is currently sold in a variety of independent retailers, as well as the fine jewelry departments at select Saks Fifth Avenues and Bloomingdales, among others.
